If you have the joy of the Lord...

Posted 08.23.2012

I have a favorite saying. I didn’t make it up. I just heard it. Maybe you’ve heard me say it before. It’s brilliant and goes like this:

“If you have the joy of the Lord, please inform your face.”

I don’t know about you, but I’ve met some Christians before who are downright angry, belligerent, and hyper-critical people. They’re consistently mean.

C.S. Lewis on Christianity as Sabotage

Posted 08.16.2012

C.S. Lewis famously declared, “Christianity is the story of how the rightful King has landed, you might say in disguise, and is calling us all to take part in His great campaign of sabotage.”

I like that definition. It emphasizes some aspects of our faith that, for a variety of reasons, have been overlooked in the church for quite a while – and, in my opinion, to our detriment.

Our Approach to Culture

Posted 05.03.2012

When it comes to the world and culture, Christians can adopt a variety of stances. Theologians and social philosophers have described these in a variety of ways (Tim Keller perhaps being especially helpful in this regard). However, we have four basic options. For our purposes, we'll call them incorporation, isolation, insulation, and integration.

Churches and Religious Liberty

Posted 02.07.2012

Dear Members and Friends of MCC:

As a signer of the Manhattan Declaration, I received the following email today from Chuck Colson, Robert George, and Timothy George concerning recent and alarming events concerning the future of religious liberty in the United States of America:

Why do we baptize infants?

God's blessed our congregation with lots and lots of children! Last night, I brought two of my own up to the church for PoweredUP, our midweek children's ministry for those kids in K-5th grade. They were greeted by many friends. It's exciting to see so many young souls growing in the love of God and each other.

Are you coming to the "family reunion?"

Posted 01.19.2012

We try to make family meals a priority in our house. Trust me: it doesn’t always work, and sometimes it’s a hilarious disaster, but it remains a priority. When we can make it happen, we do.

The ritual is pretty simple. After corralling the kids through a day of school, Molly summons the strength to prepare a meal while the punks do homework or play. God bless her. Yikes. It ain’t easy, but she somehow gets it done.

Note from PK | Why do we "March for Life?"

In just a few short days, a bus from Murrysville Community Church will be heading down to Washington, D.C. for the annual March for Life. If history is any indicator, there will be empty seats on that bus.

Sermon Note | Shaping your perspective

Posted 01.05.2012

I still remember the day. We were driving home, passing by the local Dodge dealership. Through squinting eyes, I could barely make out the large letters advertising the newest deal on a quality Dodge vehicle. My dad asked me to read it; I couldn’t. Within a week or two, I was wearing glasses – plastic rim, brown, ugly, early 1980’s glasses. Can anyone say chick magnet?

Sermon Note | Enjoying more, worrying less

Posted 01.04.2012

Consider your average day. Maybe today. Maybe yesterday. How much of it did you spend worrying?

Did you worry about finances? Did you worry about juggling the demands of a busy schedule? Did you worry about the results of a medical test, yours or a loved one’s? Did you worry about your job? Did you worry about the well-being of your friends and family members? Did you worry about others’ perception of you?
