Sermon Note | This Sunday: "When Silence Isn't Golden"

Posted 01.04.2012

Growing up, I (maybe like you) enjoyed playing street hockey in the winter. After school, my buddies and I would meet at our friend Jimmy's house. He lived on an almost dead-end street. With only a few cars passing by each hour, it was the perfect setting for a bunch of wannabe Wayne Gretzkys, Gilbert Perraults, and Mario Lemieuxs to battle for an imaginary Stanley Cup.

Around dinnertime, Jimmy's neighbors started coming home from work. With the approach of every vehicle, one of our stick-wielding posse would yell out, "CAR!" We'd lug the nets and ourselves out of the way and let the car pass. With the car safely gone, we'd then reposition the nets, ourselves, and wait for Jimmy to yell "GAME ON!"

Sometimes, the warning of oncoming traffic was annoying. After all, who would want to interrupt a sweet "breakaway" to accommodate a 70's Ford Pinto? Annoying as it was though, we all knew it was necessary. We knew about the Ford Pinto. It might blow up if it hit anything! Just kidding. Kind of.

This Sunday, we're going to delve a bit deeper into the book of Galatians. We'll see that while God's truth might annoy us in our self-centered ways or sometimes even seem to hurt our chances for worldly glory, it's ultimately for our good. Like a 10-year-old would-be Lemieux yelling "CAR!", God's Word can protect us from all sorts of danger.

I hope you'll join us for this Sunday's message, "When Silence Isn't Golden." We'll consider how God loves us enough to tell us what we don't want to hear. We'll learn how to receive those kinds of messages from others with a gracious spirit. We'll learn how and when to speak up, sharing even difficult truths in love. It should be a good time of encouragement and challenge.

With much love in Christ,

PK
